On Wednesday 1st February Alba played host to the John Duffy Portfolio. This is a series of 50 images selected from the Glasgow and District Photographic Union's member clubs. Each club can submit 4 images which are then judged and the top 50 form the portfolio. The competition is a memorial to the late John Duffy, a renowned photographer in the Glasgow area. This year out of Alba's 4 entries 3 were in the top 50. These were 'Jupiter Rising' by Derek Monaghan, 'Three in a Row' by Ronnie Inglis and 'Merlin' also by Ronnie Inglis, the later scoring a very commendable 19 out of 20, so well done to the guys for that. The 50 prints were on display at our meeting and each member had the opportunity to be judge for the evening as there were no notes or scores attached to the prints on display. Lorna McDonald then went through each print and gave the real judge's score and comments which caused a great deal of debate and lively comment among the members. This proved once again that judging is very much subjective and in the eye of the beholder as our scores did not often resemble the final judge's score; in fact no one in in the club marked the eventual winner as such. The evening further proved that on competition nights the results pivot only on one person's opinion.
Overall again a great night at Alba.
